Elphinstone Reef (Sha'ab Shagra)

rated along side the Marine Park Islands Elphinstone used to be the preserve of liveaboard divers but is now accessible by day boat from Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib. Around 12Km offshore from Abu Dabab the cigar shaped reef lies north to south. Steep walls on the east and western sides are swept by frequent strong currents. North and south the reef forms plateaus shelving to 30m before falling away. Schooling scalloped Hammerheads have traditionally been seen on the North Plateau in the warmer months while the Oceanic Whitetips were more often encountered in the autumn but have become more frequently visitors.
