Diving the Maldives' Lhaviyani & Baa Atolls

Actually part of Maalhossmadulu Atoll Baa Atoll is seperated from its northerly neighbour, Raa, by a 3 kilometre wide kandu, with steep walls into deep water. To the south of Baa is a smaller atoll called Goidhoo. Baa itself contains over 90 islands and its eastern wall is split by a series of kandu's promoting good coral growth. Baa has just a handful of tourist resorts so dive sites are relatively unkown. Due to its location on the western side of the Maldives chain during Hulhagu, April-December season, the visibility is reduced with the amount of plankton in the water. This attracts manta rays and whalesharks to Baa in some numbers, especially May through July. Hani Faru was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2009.

With some excellent channels much of the better diving in Lhaviyani Atoll is in its northern half with sites quite closely grouped. It's 'signature' sites include the two wrecks at the Shipyard and the drift dive of Kuredu Express.
