Diving the Maldives' South Male & Felidhoo Atolls

South Male Atoll has some spectacular drop-offs and caves. Probably the best diving is on its eastern edge close to the island of Kandooma. Kandooma Thila offers one of the underwater marvels of the South Male atoll, some superb drift diving, and with a good chance of seeing Grey Reef sharks and various species of ray. For the more experienced diver Guraidhoo Corner is exceptional with either an incoming or outgoing current. During Iruvaa, December-April, currents tend to be strong with excellent visibility (25-40m). Most dives are at the channel entrance or drop offs where all the big fish can be seen, such as large Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally, large schools of Eagle Rays and, of course, sharks. Note some sites are not suitable for beginner divers. Hulhagu, April-December, brings rain and tropical storms, but some very good dives for manta rays. Visibility is reduced (10-15m) due to plankton in the water; however, this is also what most marine creatures feed upon. During September there is the chance to see Whalesharks and Hammerheads.

The north east wall of Felidhoo Atoll (aka Felidhu) is split by numerous kandus which are a favourite for liveaboard guides during the seaon of Iruvaa, with visability up to 40 metres its easy to see plenty shark action, including Hammerheads at Fushi Kandu. Fotteyo in the east of the atoll is known for its soft coral encrusted caves.
