Diving the Wrecks of the MaldivesThere are numerous Maldivian ship wrecks spread down the full length of the atoll chain. Unlike the Wrecks of the Red Sea, Chuuk (Truk) or Scapa Flow very few of the wrecks of the Maldives were the result of war (the wreck of the British Loyalty sunk by a Japanese submarine being one exception). Most were wooden sailing ships traversing the Indian Ocean between South Asia and Arabia or Europe like Portuguese traders and Baggalas, two-masted Arab or Indian trading vessels. There are numerous fishing vessels, steel cargo ships and quite a few steel boats sunk by local dive operators as artificial reefs.
Here we present links to descriptions of the known wrecks of the Maldives' seperated by the Maldives region in which they rest. There is still plenty of work to be done researching, officially identifying and even locating many more, so this page will be updated as we have more information. The wrecks are listed under the relevant atoll with the reef or island where it is located followed by the name of the wreck. Where a date is shown this is either the pressumed or known year of sinking.
